Principal’s “Year End” Message

Dear Parents & Guardians,

What an amazing year! I can’t believe the 2018/19 school year has come to an end and that summer “officially” begins next week.

I have thoroughly enjoyed being the Principal here at Sea to Sky Learning Connections, including Aya7ayulh Chet (Cultural Journeys) and Learning Expeditions for the second straight year. The growth that I have seen over the past 2 years has been outstanding and I can’t wait for more of this excellence to continue next year. With our overall school theme of Perseverancefor next year, I am confident that our students will come even farther in their confidence and in their capabilities as learners and leaders.

Whether it be in the classroom, the gym, the playground, the forest, at the river, doing traditional practices at the Alice Lake Longhouse, or engaging in amazing and purposeful projects in our community, I truly believe that the work we are doing is up is “the way” to learn and to live. All the staff are dedicated to this philosophy and you have our word that we will continue to do this work.

In regard to staffing for next year, I would be remiss to share the following updates…

Saying Goodbye:

Lindsey Boersma has decided to embark on a different journey next year. We wish her all the best wherever she lands and we thank her for all her work over the years.

Shaun Jacob has just recently been announced as a new Vice Principal at Don Ross Middle School. We want to wish Shaun the best of luck in his new role and hoping he can share the amazing work he has been doing here the last couple years. We will be looking for a new Math teacher at Learning Expeditions over the summer.

Ms. Lowe will be stepping out of the classroom next year and into a Collaborative Support role in supporting all the classes at Cultural Journeys. This is Ms. Lowe’s passion and we look forward to her amazing work supporting all our students.
Saying Hello:

Janaya Minkus is returning next year to teach 3 days per week in the intermediate classroom (Gr 4-6) and will also be doing some Learning Support with Danielle. We are really excited to have Janaya back next year!

Matthew Van Oostdam is returning next year and will be teaching 2 days per week in the intermediate classroom (Gr 4-6) as well as in a project planning coordinator capacity. We are really excited to have “Dory” back and look forward to more amazing projects on the land!

Natalia West has just joined us as the new Primary teacher at Cultural Journeys. Natalia has previously taught primary at Signal Hill in Pemberton and at Valleycliffe Elementary. We are really excited to have Natalia join us and can’t wait for September.
Principal Update:

I also wanted to share that my portfolio will be changing next year and that I will be at Cultural Journeys and Learning Expeditions FULL TIME next year. Although sad to lose the Sea to Sky Alternative School programs under my direction, I am eager to spend more time up here at St’a7mes (Stawamus) in continuing with the amazing and powerful work we are already doing.

The Sea to Sky Alternative School is moving to be under the direction of Howe Sound Secondary School, and the Northern Outreach Program will fall under the direction of Sea to Sky School District Distance Learning.

School Start-up – September 2019:

Once again, I want to wish all the families from Aya7ayulh Chet (Cultural Journeys) and Learning Expeditions a safe and restful summer vacation. See you in September!
